Trichiasis is a typical issue with the eyelids. To the eye, eyelashes grow inward. The inner surface of the eyelids, the conjunctiva, and the cornea are all rubbed by the eyelashes. This makes the eye itch.
Why Does Trichiasis Occur?
Trichiasis can occur sometimes with no known cause. Trichiasis may strike anyone. Adults are more prone to it. Trichiasis has several causes, such as
Eye infectionSwelling of the eyelid
Autoimmune conditions
Trauma
Your chance of acquiring trichiasis is increased by the following conditions:
- Epiblepharon. Congenital disease would be this. A fold is created by loose skin around the eye. The lashes become vertical as a result of this. Children of Asian origin are most likely to experience this.
- Eye herpes zoster infection.
- injuries to the eyes, including burns.
- chronic eye inflammation This is a persistent and widespread disorder. Swelling develops in the eyelids. Near the base of the eyelashes, the lid border is covered in germs and oily particles.
- Trachoma. This serious eye infection is common in underdeveloped countries.
uncommon skin and mucous membrane diseases. (Cicatricial pemphigoid and Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
Symptoms:
The sense of something being in your eye might irritate your eye.
Additional signs include:
- tears,
- sensitivity to bright light,
- redness
Treatment:
Treatment for trichiasis entails removing the eyelash, the follicle, or both, or rerouting the development of the eyelash.
Sometimes only a few eyelashes are affected by trichiasis. Your ophthalmologist could just use forceps to remove them (tweezers). The eyelashes might perhaps regrow in the incorrect way this time.
Surgery can remove eyelashes that are developing in large numbers permanently. Radiowaves or lasers are used in ablation surgery to eliminate hair and eyelash follicles. Prior to the outpatient operation, your ophthalmologist will anaesthetize your eye.
Other surgical procedures comprise:
Electrolysis. Electricity is used in this method to eliminate hair permanently. Electrolysis is time-consuming and occasionally uncomfortable, despite being successful.
Cryosurgery. By freezing them, this eliminates the lashes and follicles. Although successful, cryosurgery carries the potential for problems.
